The passion.

Having been desperate to fish for big game since a boy, inspired by the writings of intrepid anglers like Trevor Housby, my first opportunity came in 1989 when I fished in the 1st British Marlin Championship in Mauritius. More by luck than judgment, I was individual winner and member of the winning team in the tournament. From that moment on, I just wanted more. Over the years I have fished Madeira several times, Bermuda, Florida, El Hierro, La Gomera, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote, Croatia, Canada, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Holland, France and of course extensively in the UK.

Historically the mainstay of my stand up rod and heavy tackle customers were those headed to or residing in Scotland fishing for Skate and those fishing for Tuna in Ireland, which started to arrive in 2000 and where the following year Adrian Molloy set a new Irish and European record with a rod caught fish of 968lb. The burgeoning UK big fish scene has brought new customers. Big Sharks and the arrival of Bluefin Tuna around our coastline has brought the kind of fishing that many of us have spent thousands of pounds on over the years flying to far flung places, within reach of a comfortable car journey.

With a long list of blanks available and each manufacturer having their own idea of blank ratings, it can be confusing to an inexperienced rod builder to know which one will be suitable. Aspects such as construction material, blank taper and wall thickness play a huge part in how a blank behaves. I offer four 50lb class stand up blanks for example. Each suited to a particular task.
